Sea of Thieves is a shared world action-adventure video game developed by Rare and published by Microsoft Studios for Microsoft Windows 10 and Xbox One. The game allows players to take the role of a pirate, sailing the seas of a fantastical world either solo or as part of a crew of up to four players. The game features both co-operative and player versus player combat. It was released worldwide on 20 March 2018.
The first content update for Sea of Thieves will arrive in early May, and five more are planned for release this year.

Rare announced today the first content update for Sea of Thieves will be called The Hungering Deep.

It is slated to arrive in May, and five more content updates are in the plan for 2018. Two are planned for this summer and will include a new ship, new part of the map, additional enemies, mechanics, and rewards.

The other three content updates are planned to arrive before the end of 2018.

Alongside regular content updates, Sea of Thieves players can expect weekly events featuring various goals and new mechanics.

When it releases in early May, The Hungering Deep will feature a new enemy which crews will need to discover and defeat as part of a unique event.

It will also introduce a number of new mechanics to aid players taking part in the adventure, and of course, there will be new rewards.

“We’ve been listening closely to our community, and we know how keen they are to hear how we plan to grow Sea of Thieves,” said Sea of Thieves executive producer Joe Neate.

“As we’ve always said, the launch is just the start for Sea of Thieves, and we are going to grow and evolve the game with feedback from our community.”

The studio discusses its content plans in depth in the developer video below.

Here’s a breakdown of what Rare discussed in the video:

Regular content updates and weekly events
  • Content updates will add major new features alongside new items & mechanics, with new goals and rewards.
  • Weekly events will introduce new mechanics, or see fun goals for players to achieve in the world.
The Hungering Deep – first content update coming in early May
  • The Hungering Deep brings a new AI threat to the world, that crews will have to work together to discover and defeat as part of a unique event. It will also introduce a number of new mechanics that will assist players on this adventure, and there will be unique rewards that players can earn as part of this event.
Five more content updates for 2018
  • This summer will see the debut of Cursed Sails, which will include a new ship type, and Forsaken Shores, which will introduce players to a new perilous part of the world to explore. Similar to The Hungering Deep, both of these updates will also include new gameplay mechanics for players, new AI threats to challenge and new unique rewards to claim.
  • Content plans will continue to grow and evolve, based on feedback from players. Based on feedback since launch, Rare changed the priorities for both Pets and Ship Captaincy which had been previously announced as things to add in the few months after launch. These are on the backburner for now while things are added to the game in other areas. Expect plans to continue to be fluid but always with the goals listed above as a guiding principle.
All of the aforementioned content will be available to Sea of Thieves players at no additional cost.

In the wake of Hungering Deep, Sea of Thieves will feature not one, but two expansions.

Sea of Thieves may have only launched in March, but Rare is clearly committed to new content. During its E3 presser, Microsoft announced two unique expansions that are slated to arrive this summer.

In a new, appropriately tongue-in-cheek trailer, a fortune teller teases new information to the player. Among the details are new lands to explore, undead ship crews to fight, and – of course – booty to loot.

Sea of Thieves: Cursed Sails arrives in July. Forsaken Shores will launch in August.

Sea of Thieves developer Rare has announced an impending change to the game’s file structure, which is unfortunately going to require players to download the whole game again.

In a new Sea of Thieves developer update, Rare executive producer Joe Neate revealed that the team has been working on a way to reduce the game’s file size on all platforms.

But, in order for this to happen, everyone is going to have to download the game again come February 6, when this update is scheduled to release. The good news is that the new download size is much smaller by comparison.

Base Xbox One players will only have to download 10GB, which is down from 35GB. On Xbox One X, the download size is dropping to 25GB from 47GB. Finally, PC players are looking at a 27GB download, instead of 47GB.

This new structure will ensure that Sea of Thieves’ install footprint won’t have to expand nearly as much the more content gets added. It also means future patches will be slightly bigger, but that’s about it.

With more PvP-focused updates coming to Sea of Thieves in the future, developer Rare is taking steps to ensure a fair experience for everyone.

In a new developer update, Sea of Thieves executive producer Joe Neate revealed the studio’s intent to allow Xbox One players to choose whether they want to play with and against PC players.

Since launch, cross-play has been the default option for Sea of Thieves, and it’ll continue to be so until these changes are implemented. Though details are still being finalised, Neate said the game will essentially have separate multiplayer pools for players with a controller and those playing with a mouse and keyboard.

This is important because Sea of Thieves will soon support mouse and keyboard on Xbox One, so it makes a lot of sense to start working on a no-cross-play option now. This will also come very handy when the game’s Arena update launches later this year.

Arena is a PvP-focused expansion, and it’s another reason why controller players would want to be matched with and against others using the same input device. Once again, how the feature actually works is something Rare will detail closer to launch.

The Anniversary Update for Sea of Thieves is available for free on April 30 with Xbox Game Pass or on Xbox One, Windows 10 PC, and the biggest update yet is packed with content that will appeal to players of all kinds. From the glory and gunfire of competitive multiplayer in The Arena to the serenity of fishing up your latest catch for the Hunter’s Call Trading Company, the Anniversary Update brings something for everyone.

Let's take a closer look at what it means to bring story-focused adventures to a shared-world game, and some of the new gameplay features players can expect as they seek out the mythical Shroudbreaker relic.

Shores of Gold is made up of nine distinct Tall Tales, each of which can be tackled as part of a pirate crew or by a solo player. Although each Tale is part of a larger saga that spans the Sea of Thieves, they can be enjoyed individually and you’re able to replay Tales you’ve completed previously. In fact, each Tale has been structured to be played repeatedly, meaning you won’t always find secrets and solutions in the places you might have been expecting them.

Your quest to reach the Shores of Gold, a legendary location filled with untold riches that lie within the deadly Devil’s Shroud, begins with the hunt for an ancient relic that can clear a path through the fog – a relic once sought by the Pirate Lord himself. All of this takes place upon the same shared seas as always, so other pirate crews may have their part to play in your adventure.

This perilous endeavour is just the start of an epic journey that will lead players across the Sea of Thieves. There’ll be ancient parchments to decipher, puzzles to solve, traps to dodge, and battles with fearsome enemies that stand between you and your ultimate destination – the massive, mysterious island known as the Shores of Gold.

Along the way, you’ll meet a rag-tag cast of heroes and villains, some of whom are familiar faces from the game and the Sea of Thieves expanded universe, along with an all-new assortment of warmongers, cursed rogues, star-crossed lovers and more. Every tale features professional voice acting to help advance the story, not to mention secret lore books and commendations to work towards as you play.

Key Features
  • Tall Tales – Shores of Gold brings nine story-driven adventures to the shared world of Sea of Thieves.
  • Players can enjoy each adventure as part of a crew or alone, and Tales are designed to be replayed and enjoyed again and again.
  • New types of gameplay, including enchanted tools and artefacts to master and new locations to explore.
  • Decipher long-lost journals and ancient puzzles, battle against fearsome new foes and dodge deadly traps in underground labyrinths.
  • Tales designed to imbue excitement, fear, sadness and joy, with characters voiced by professional actors.
  • Available to all players for free as part of the Sea of Thieves Anniversary Update.
