The arrival of the brand new Madden 20 game later this summer has sports game fans buzzing. The game will release in August, right before the official start of the season, and the cover spot this year goes to the Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes. It also brings some exciting new features including “Face of the Franchise.” With three different versions of the game available for pre-order, the Ultimate Superstar Edition brings fans extra content to enjoy.

What does Madden 20 Ultimate Superstar Edition include?

In addition to the cover athlete reveal, a release date of August 2, 2019, was also revealed. Enthusiastic Madden fans can already start to pre-order the different editions of the new Madden 20 game. That includes the Madden 20 Ultimate Superstar Edition which is basically the deluxe edition of the game. It will bring extra content and early access.

One of the exciting features in the new Madden 20 game is "Face of the Franchise." EA promises something exciting this new, revised campaign mode where you create your college quarterback and start a personalized career campaign mode. This allows for gamers to build a quarterback and guide him through his college season. They can choose one of 10 different college teams for their player to take through the College Football Playoffs. These teams are the Florida Gators, Oregon Ducks, Texas Tech Red Raiders, Oklahoma Sooners, LSU Tigers, South Carolina Gamecocks, Texas Longhorns, Clemson Tigers, Miami Hurricanes, or Florida State Seminoles.

It will also feature Superstar X-Factor, a progression and ability system that’s said to reveal special abilities for players. It’s not clear yet exactly how that affects the game, but more information will most likely come closer to release.

One added bonus for pre-ordering the Ultimate Superstar Edition is the ability to add a unique quarterback style from one of the greats to your created QB. The options include Steve Young, Kurt Warner, John Elway, or Randall Cunningham.

In addition, the following content is included with the Madden 20 Ultimate Superstar Edition:
  • 15 Gold Team Fantasy Packs
  • Your choice of one out of 32 Core Elite players from your favourite NFL team
  • One large Training Quicksell Pack in Madden Ultimate Team
  • One Past and Present Elite Player Pack in Madden Ultimate Team
  • One Madden Championship Series Pack in Madden Ultimate Team
That added content will help gamers get their Ultimate Team rosters going as well as their college QB.

Madden NFL 2020 will release on August 2 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The game will have three editions: Standard, Superstar, and Ultimate. Superstar and Ultimate Editions will get 3 days’ early access to the game as well as multiple bonuses. You can check out more details at the game’s product page, and the reveal trailer above.

Face of the Franchise sounds like an interesting addition :)

Mahomes is a good choice as cover star, hopefully he doesn't suffer the "Madden" curse and then never perform at the same level again. If I was a pro in the NFL, I'd decline any offer to be on the cover of the game.

The EA Madden Twitch folks will give more Madden 20 features analysis for gamers to digest.

Madden 20 features Twitch schedule

Over at EA’s Madden Twitch channel, the Daily Drops crew brings gamers the latest Madden content news. They’ll be continuing to deliver that for the current Madden 19 game. They’ll also reveal more in-depth looks at some of the new game’s features. That will include things like the college quarterback feature “Face of the Franchise,” and the intriguing new “Superstar X-Factor” abilities.

The Daily Drops crew provided a schedule for their upcoming live “Community Streams” in the month of May. Each will be for a specific topic related to the upcoming Madden 20 features.

It all starts on May 2 with the discussion of the new “Face of the Franchise: QB1” feature which has plenty of people amped up. In that feature, gamers create their own quarterback and guide them through two important college games into the NFL. With no dedicated college football game available from EA, this particular feature is one to watch out for.

On May 9, gamers will get to learn all about the interesting new “Superstar X-Factor Abilities” which are special abilities certain players will possess in the game. They’ll require completing a certain set of objectives to activate them so that player gets “in the zone.” So this should also be interesting to see. One of the abilities mentioned in a recent Twitch video is “Bazooka Mahomes” where the Madden 20 cover star is able to hurl the ball 80 yards downfield to a receiver.

May 16 will bring Ultimate Team into focus, one of the most popular features of the Madden franchise. On May 23, gamers get to look at a “deep dive” into the Madden 20 gameplay, while May 30 will be all about the Madden Mobile experience.

This is what’s new in Madden 20 including the most exciting new Madden 20 features and how it compares to previous version. EA delivers major upgrades to the create-a-player mode, you can play college games, the Pro Bowl and there are MUT upgrades along with a new Superstar X-factor that you’ll need to account for.

These are all new when you compare Madden 20 vs Madden 19.

Last year EA upgraded the graphics and the in-game physics with Real Player Motion and tweaks across various game mechanics. This year, we’re seeing a lot of upgrades to play and new modes to better align with the story modes in other sports games.

Here’s a look at the most exciting Madden 20 features and upgrades from Madden 19.
  1. QB1 Personalized Scenarios for Franchise
  2. Create a College QB & Play NCAA Championships
  3. Play the Pro Bowl
  4. Superstar X-Factor
  5. Unique Playbooks
  6. New Option Plays
  7. Pump Fake Upgrades
  8. MUT Missions
  9. On Field Trainer
  10. New Celebrations
QB1 Personalized Scenarios for Franchise

QB1 is the new upgrade for the Franchise mode that allows you to play as the main character in your franchise. This allows you to create a quarterback, pick your college and then work your way into the NFL.

It's not confirmed yet, but we could see face scanning using your phone, similar to how other sports games handle the create a player.

This will let you work through the College playoffs, the NFL Combine, the NFL Draft, breaking into the NFL and then eventually playing in the Pro Bowl and the Super Bowl.

This ties into the new Scenario Engine that combines your on field and off-field actions to influence the next steps. Unlike the story mode in Madden 19, this new mode focuses on creating personalized in-game options.

This all leads up to the start of the typical Franchise mode, so this is a tie in, not a full new mode that stands alone and then stops as soon as you hit the pros.

Create a College QB & Play NCAA Championships

This is part of the QB1 experience, but with no NCAA 20 release coming, it is worth a break out.

You can play college football in Madden 20, including the playoffs and the NCAA Championships.

Right now you can play on one of 10 NCAA schools. This includes;
  1. Clemson
  2. Miami
  3. Florida
  4. Oregon
  5. Oklahoma
  6. LSU
  7. Texas
  8. USC
  9. Florida State
  10. Texas Tech
After you complete this play, you will be able to move on to the combine and then into the NFL.

Play the Pro Bowl

For years gamers have been asking to play the Pro Bowl, and with Madden 20 that is finally a reality.

When you play the Franchise mode with the QB1, or with a standard Franchise, you can compete in the Pro Bowl and for other seasonal awards.

It's unclear if you will be able to call this mode up and play against a friend in a Pro Bowl without going through a full franchise mode, but we should learn more about this in the near future.

EA plans a special outline of the Franchise mode on May 2nd.

Superstar X-Factor

One of the major new features is the Superstar X-factor and Superstar players. EA confirms that there are about 50 Superstar X factor players and more than 30 additional Superstar players.

You'll get Zone abilities and Superstar abilities that you can use to get an edge on your opponent. The Zone abilities happen when your player is in the zone. To get in the zone, you need to complete objectives and possibly change your style of play. If you're trying to get your QB in the zone, you need to pass, not run. The objectives will be harder on higher difficulty levels.

Madden 20 launches with over 20 Zone abilities and over 140 Superstar abilities. EA promises that you will be able to "see and feel the difference" in each game because of these special abilities.

Unique Playbooks

One of the challenges with playing Madden in previous years was that the playbooks didn't offer a very wide variety from team to team.

In Madden 20, the playbooks will offer more variety and more noticable differences from team to team. This will make a difference in which team you pick for exhibition games and which playbook you pick for Madden Ultimate Team.

EA says the new playbooks will offer, "more variety for strategic game-planning and in-game adjustments."

Expect to see more information in the coming weeks.

New Option Plays

Part of the playbook and play calling upgrades that will make many players happy is the addition of more run/pass options.

This will allow you to call run/pass option plays more often and with better flow to add to the authenticity of the game.

We don't know exactly how many plays you will be able to choose, how you will be able to audible to them and how this works, but it is a nice change that should add more variety and realism to the game.

Pump Fake Upgrades

If you love embarrassing opponents when you play online in Madden, you'll love the new Pump Fake upgrades.

Starting with Madden 20, you will b able to pump fake to specific receivers. This can help free up coverage and move the opponent around the field in new ways.

You can also use the double tap to cancel the throw if you decide that receiver isn't a good option anymore.

This is a new Madden 20 mechanic that you'll want to master if you play competitively online.

MUT Missions

If you are a Madden Ultimate Team players, you'll want to pay attention to the new MUT Missions.

We are waiting on more details, but this looks like it will be MLB The Show style missions that you can complete to earn in game rewards.

We also expect challenges that will help you get more MUT rewards throughout the season.

On Thursday May 16th, you will learn more about the Madden 20 Ultimate Team changes.

On Field Trainer

EA's been working on upgrades to help new players learn how to play Madden better and to use the Madden features and this year it's getting an upgrade with a new On-field trainer.

This new teaching mechanism will show you how to use the new Madden 20 features and other Madden features that will allow help you be a better player.

It sounds like this will be on screen and in game as you play, showing you what new features you can use and when to use them.

We expect to learn about new Madden 20 training features on May 23rd.

New Celebrations

Rounding out the new Madden 20 features are new celebrations for touchdowns and first downs.

EA says this will add more realism to the game and we're happy to see that there are over 20 new celebrations coming in Madden 20.

For those of us that play a lot of Madden Ultimate Team, it can be tiring to see the same celebrations over and over.

With the new touchdown and first down celebrations, you'll be able to boast when you pull off a great play.

EA Sports have revealed far more detail on what to expect out of Face of the Franchise: QB1 along with additions and improvements made to Franchise Mode. Check out the press release info below.

FACE OF THE FRANCHISE

PREPARING FOR THE PROS

When talking and listening to players, we kept hearing that being a star of their own football story would be fantastic. With that in mind, we crafted Face of the Franchise: QB1, where the story is not only about you, but one where the choices you make matter.

It kicks off with creating yourself as a quarterback – even using “face editing” to get an improved likeness. Once you have your player, you begin in college, choosing from top schools to attend, then competing for a national championship in the college football playoffs. Be the BMOC and take home the title, but bring your A-game, because your performance in college – just like on the real collegiate gridiron – has an impact on your capabilities and your draft stock.

The NFL draft doesn’t just happen, though – the combine comes first. Ever-increasing in importance and scrutinization, the combine is a key part of the process. And here, if you want your stock to soar, you’ll need to focus on every rep and decision you make to keep your name rising on draft boards. Where will you get picked, and where will your NFL career start? You’ll find out on draft day!

IN THE LEAGUE

No matter where you get drafted – from first round to last – once a team picks you, you’re going to have to show you belong playing with the pros. Whether you’re a first-rounder who needs to prove you were the perfect high pick, or a seventh-rounder busting your ass to make the roster, if you want success you have to work hard and make each opportunity count.

In the NFL, start building your legacy and taking your franchise to winning seasons, expanding your legend with each snap. It’s not about the cash your contracts rack up, but about how many Super Bowls you win as your legend grows. Give your all – and have fun – as you play your way into memorable moments. When you celebrate your career at the end, will you be remembered among the greats, placed alongside them in the Hall of Fame?

As you live your superstar story, Madden’s new Scenario Engine generates personalized playable scenarios, events, and dynamic challenges that tell the tale of a unique NFL career. Adding to it, in Face of the Franchise: QB1, like in Franchise mode, you choose your Archetype: Strong Arm, Scrambler, Improviser, Field General. Superstar abilities are tied to the Archetype you pick. Levelling up your archetypes unlocks different abilities.

FRANCHISE MODE

Pro Bowl Returns to Madden NFL 20

The first thing you’ll see while Madden NFL 20 sets up is the Pro Bowl. You can play the pro bowl while the game installs, and you will also have the opportunity to qualify for the Pro Bowl during your Franchise seasons. It’s another opportunity to gain valuable experience and add to your Legacy.

Ratings Spread

We’ve adjusted the range of ratings that you’ll see on players.
  • The ratings difference between a 90 OVR player and an 89 OVR player is now larger
  • Each skill point you spend will be more impactful, and you can earn more skill points over the course of a career
  • In some cases, you will now see a starter with an OVR in the mid-50s.
New Scenarios

We’ve added an all-new in-game system that generates personalized playable scenarios featuring interactions with characters via a variety of ways including branching dialogue, dynamic events that reflect your performance and choices, challenges that build the story of your unique NFL career (from the moment you sign your rookie contract to you Hall of Fame induction), and more.

Development Traits

We’ve made large updates to our Development Trait system to support Superstar and Zone abilities. The Development Traits in Madden 20 are: Normal, Star, Superstar, and Superstar X-Factor. Both Superstar and X-Factors players can earn Superstar Abilities, but only X-Factors can earn Zone Abilities. We’ve also addressed one of the communities’ biggest complaints: players dropping down in Development Trait. In Madden 20, players can no longer go down in Development Trait at the end of a season.

Coach Mode

Coach mode is also getting scenarios. And the changes to Development Traits have a big impact on Coach mode. Coaches will want to build up their teams with Superstars and X-Factor Superstars via Trades, free agency, and the draft. We’ve also added an overhauled lineup UI to make Franchise mode even smoother.

Contract Updates

We’ve taken a meticulous pass on existing player contracts to ensure they match the NFL. This will not only be more authentic, but it will also make managing your roster’s cap space more realistic.

Progression Updates

We’ve overhauled our progression tuning, including making changes to XP gains from weekly training, actions on the field, and goal completion. These changes should ultimately lead to users being able to increase the OVR of more players on their team meaning they have more option in how to develop their roster.

Draft Updates

We’ve taken a full pass on our Rookie Generators. People familiar with draft classes from the past few years are in for some new surprises, from names to bodies, to ratings, and more.

One more draft surprise is that rookies with a Superstar Development or higher trait will have their development trait hidden until they’ve played through at least half of a season. These players have their abilities hidden until you reveal their Development Trait. This means that if you draft either a Superstar or an X-Factor Superstar you won’t know exactly what you’ve drafted until later in a season – use your preseason wisely.

Developer EA Tiburon supports its Madden titles with patches, roster updates, new commentary, and Ultimate Team content, but that won't be all for Madden 20.

Here's a quick look at some of the other currently announced additions coming down the road.

Playbook Additions

Creative director Mike Young told us that this is the first year that the developer is able to update the game's playbooks from week to week. While EA hasn't committed to a specific cadence, this could offer great flexibility and is necessary. One thing EA Tiburon has announced is that the defensive playbooks will be refreshed during the year.

5th Yr. Contracts for First-Round Picks

Teams like the fifth-year option for first-round picks because it lets them kick the tires on the rookie for four years, with the fifth year adding extra time to sort out a possible new contract before the player tries to cash in on the free agency market. Or the team can decline the fifth-year option and let the player walk if it's just not working out. During a livestream, the developer announced the game would be adding fifth-year options during the season. It's about time.

X-Factors/Superstar Abilities Updates

These new abilities are one of the cornerstones of the game, and it only makes sense that, like a normal roster update, the list of who is and isn't deserving of them would change during the season. Although the NFL season hasn't started yet, EA Tiburon has already given abilities to some offensive linemen. For the future, the developer says the release cadence of these changes won't be the same as the roster updates, but will likely come out after the game's larger eSports tournaments.

New Scenarios

The new scenario engine is a key part of the franchise and QB1 modes, and updating through the year to freshen things up is something the company has wanted to do for a little while now. It'll be interesting to see if the developer creates new scenarios to try and mirror what drama we may see in this year's real-life NFL, which we know there will be.

MUT Superstar Ability Tiers

X-Factors and Superstar abilities are going to make Ultimate Team an interesting beast as players pick which ones they want to use. At launch, upgradable players can only get three Superstar abilities, one per tier. Afterwards, the team says it has plans to offer more choices for each tier, diversifying the possibilities.

MUT Power Up Pass Reminder?

The MUT Power-Up pass is a great way to boost your Power Up player a level, as it fills that tier's requirement for a specific card (like a Core Elite, for example). The first-world problem for users is that it's easy to forget you have them in your binder. While EA Tiburon says you might want to keep a pen and paper by your couch in the meantime, during a livestream it said some kind of in-game reminder might come later in the year.

Two more Madden 20 Legends are now part of the ongoing program this season. Each weekend brings us new legends of the gridiron for Ultimate Team, available in packs, challenges, or auctions. This Saturday brings us former Cincinnati Bengals star Anthony Munoz and Ted Hendricks of the Oakland Raiders. Here are more details about the new player items and how to get them for Ultimate Team.

Munoz, Hendricks join Madden 20 Legends

Just a day ago, Ultimate Team revealed a legendary player for MUT 10 promotion. Now we’ve got two more. Anthony Munoz played as a left tackle for the Cincinnati Bengals for his entire career. That included 184 starts and 185 total games with four touchdowns as a receiving option. Two of those came during the 1986 season. In his 1987 season, he had a 12-yard touchdown. Munoz also racked up 11 Pro Bowl selections and was a nine-time All-Pro player. He’s now a Pro Football Hall of Fame member based on his career.

That definitely qualifies him for Madden 20 Legends, and he now has a new 90 overall card with Power Up potential. The 6-foot-6 left tackle’s key attributes include 90 Pass Block, 87 Strength, and 87 Awareness. He also has 88s across the board for Run Block, Pass Block, and the Finesse attributes making for a great card to add to your lineup.

madden-20-legends-anthony-munoz-card.jpg

Joining Munoz in the Madden 20 Legends this weekend is Ted Hendricks of the Oakland Raiders. The 6-foot-7 left outside linebacker also brings a 90 OVR with Madden Power Up on his card. Amongst the key attributes here, are his 89 Play Recognition, 88 Block Shedding, and 87 Tackle numbers.

Hendricks aka “The Mad Stork” spent the first part of his career with Baltimore from 1969 through 1973, then joined Green Bay for a season. In 1975, he became a member of the Raiders for the rest of his career. He ended up with two touchdowns, one of those on a defensive interception for the Raiders, and the other a fumble recovery TD for Baltimore. The eight-time Pro Bowler, four-time All-Pro, and four-time Super Bowl champ is also in the NFL’s Hall of Fame.

madden-20-legends-ted-hendricks-card.jpg

How to get the new player cards in MUT mode

Gamers will need to grind on missions to earn 90 OVR Anthony Munoz or Ted Hendricks Madden 20 Legends. To do so, you’ll need to collect five different cards for each player to complete a set. There are 82, 83, 84, 86, and 88 Legends cards to complete the set for each player. Once those are complete, the 90 OVR card arrives for your Ultimate Team.

To get those cards, gamers need to head to the Madden Packs store and buy Legends Packs. A single Legends Fantasy Pack is 120,000 Coins or 1,500 Points. There are also options for fantasy bundles but are only available for Points. The other option to get the necessary cards is to buy the individual cards at the Auction Browser on the game.

madden-20-legends-screen-ultimate-team-1016x520.jpg

There are also Legends challenges in Madden Ultimate Team involving Munoz and Hendricks. Completing each of them gets rewards including their Power Up player items. For either player, gamers need to simply win a game on any difficulty level. Other rewards include Coins, based on difficulty. A total of 3,100 Coins are available for each player and missions are repeatable.

Hendricks and Munoz are the latest players in the Madden 20 Legends program. Previously, we’ve seen gridiron greats including Willie Brown, Steve Young, Lawrence Taylor, and Jerry Rice. Stay tuned for more Legends next Saturday as Madden 20 season continues!
