Are people deliberately trying to be vague?

Every day I hear different people describing their chosen profession, and increasingly I've noticed most don't really say anything at all.

"I run my own business"

"In finance"

"Part time model"

Is it out of embarrassment these people try to be as vague as possible, or is it cuteness?

It's easier to start off by being vague and let whoever's asking ask follow up questions.

Sometimes it's easier to give a vague description if people wouldn't recognise your job title.

I'm a medical scientist. No one knows what that is. So I say I work in a hospital lab.
