Die-hard FIFA fans have been pining for a shake-up to Career Mode for years.

However, EA has announced a host of new FIFA 20 Career Mode changes, including better manager customisation (along with female managers for the first time), improved press conferences and morale, and dynamic player potential, that might do just that.


As always, the actual on-pitch gameplay will be the deciding factor in how much enjoyment you can glean from guiding your favourite club to glory, but after the minimal updates seen in FIFA 19, well just neede to wait and see.

FIFA 20 Career mode changes
Female Managers and better manager customisation

No longer will you have to endure the same dead-eyed expression from the one preset that looks vaguely like an FaceApp version of you on the touchline for hours on end.


FIFA 20 is bringing a much deeper creation kit to proceedings, allowing you to craft your custom manager’s face and hair from a much larger toolbox, as well as pick their outfit and accessories and change them throughout the season.

You can now also choose to play as a female manager for the first time in the series.

Dynamic Player Potential in FIFA 20

A huge item on many players’ wish lists for Career Mode has been more dynamic player potential. It’s always disheartening to score bags of goals with a club legend – although you’ll find the real icons over in FIFA 20’s FUT mode – only to see their stats decline.

With this new system, player potentials can go up and down every season. In the example given, you can perform well with a young player to raise their potential for the future, but you can also slow a player’s decline if they’re past their peak but still turning in good performances every week.


If a young player performs badly, then their potential can also decrease. This should help to stop the squad inflation that you see in longer career mode saves, where most clubs in top leagues will have squads stuffed with overalls in the high 80s but still finish mid-table.

That this seems to only take effect between seasons is slightly disappointing, but most would agree it’s a step in the right direction.

Improved player morale system and press conferences

Another complaint that many would-be managers have had is that many of the systems in career mode don’t seem to actually do anything.

Before a big match in FIFA 19 you can “Praise” or “Unnerve” the opposition, but it felt very disconnected. This extended to your own squad too, where it felt like your choices didn’t really make much of a difference.

In FIFA 20 though, EA are fleshing out the moral system so that your choices can affect a player’s form and even their overall rating depending on how you treat them. This means that a player banished to the reserves isn’t going to be as effective when called upon in a pinch, and your favourites will get a more direct boost from your support.

You’ll have many more options in player conversations and press conferences as well in FIFA 20, which are also linked to player morale.

Along with those headline additions, the screenshots in the news section of the manager hub are being revamped, and on the presentation side of things, you’ll be seeing more league specific packages.

More minor tweaks were listed in EA’s Pitch Notes column, and you can find them below. Some of them will make you nearly weep with joy. I’ll believe that there’s no more fixture congestion when I see it.

General Improvements
  • New negotiation environments in transfer negations
  • Added an option to go straight to the transfer hub after shortlisting a player
  • Redesigned Team Management screen
  • Added on option to disable international management offers
  • Increased the composure of generated youth players and increased their capacity for physical stat growth
  • Better representation of ethnicity of generated youth players based on the country they’re scouted
  • Fixed issues with league objectives in leagues with play-offs
  • Fixed issues with AI teams not using their best starting XI
  • You can now have 8 career mode saves at once
  • Fixed fixture congestion in career mode, introduced winter break and more realistic rescheduling of fixtures
  • Introduced new format for Spanish Supercup
  • Introduced special rules for leagues that have them such as half points in Austrian Bundesliga
  • You can now use a 4th substitute in extra time like in real life

FIFA 20 - the FUT changes that actually matter

Everyone can now try out FIFA 20 for themselves.

Every year, ahead of the release of the new FIFA, EA gives fans a taste with a free downloadable demo. The demo for this year’s game, FIFA 20, is already available on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

The download size is in line with previous years, coming in at just about 7GB for all platforms. The FIFA 20 demo lets you play exhibition matches with the UEFA Champions League presentation.

You’ll be able to choose from six teams this year, those being:
  • Chelsea F.C.
  • Borussia Dortmund
  • Liverpool F.C.
  • Paris Saint-Germain F.C.
  • Real Madrid C.F.
  • Tottenham Hotspur F.C.

You can play on one of three arenas: Stamford Bridge, Santiago Bernabeu, or Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The biggest addition in FIFA 20, Volta Football, is also present in the demo.

Volta is inspired by the classic FIFA Street and features 3v3, 4v4 and 5v5 action on street arenas. The demo offers a game of 3v3 Rush at the Amsterdam underpass.

Really getting frustrated with career mode now, every team I play passes the ball about like Brasil and intercepts every pass out to the wings, when passes are not intercepted they're misplaced. Headers are still a joke, also the defenders can outpace my forwards, I bought Ryhian Brewster who is a quick player but can't get passed defenders with a ball over the top, a through ball or running at defenders.

FIFA 20 update version 1.05 is available to download now for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Here are the full patch notes for this update.

The new update for FIFA 20 is the largest one so far since it launched back in September. It brings in support for the following fixes in addition to tweaking gameplay, and the other modes. Volta Football has also implemented some changes and there are many bug fixes.

FIFA 20 Update Version 1.05 Full Patch Notes (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
Gameplay (General):
Made the following changes:
  • Made a number of changes to Legendary AI Difficulty with the goal of making it more challenging:
    • Improved the CPU AI Controlled Player’s ability to mark a player that is Strafe Dribbling.
    • Improved the CPU AI Controlled Player’s ability to apply defensive pressure to the opponent’s ball carrier.
    • Improved the CPU AI Controlled Player’s passing logic by allowing it to make smarter decisions when passing.
      • This is intended to result in better passing target selection by the CPU AI Controlled Player.
      • This shouldwill result in less offside passes by the CPU AI Controlled Player.
    • When the CPU AI Controlled Player performs Step Over Skill Moves they should be more aware of the defenders.
    • The CPU AI Controlled Player will use the functionality of the new Free Kick system more effectively.
    • Improved the CPU AI Controlled Player’s crossing logic to allow them to make a better decision between making crosses versus dribbling.
    • Improved the CPU AI Controlled Player’s ability to make more precise dribbles.
    • Improved the CPU AI Controlled Player’s decision making process when attacking, specifically in situations in which it should wait for more teammates to join the attack before taking action.
    • Increased the likelihood of the CPU AI Controlled Player performing green timed shots.
    • Improved the CPU AI Controlled Player’s ability to mark players overlapping players near the wing, specifically by not switching to another teammate if the defender is already close to the ball.
    • Reduced the likelihood of the CPU AI Controlled Player performing Fake Shots in some incorrect situations.
    • Here’s a refresher on what we mean by “CPU AI Controlled Player”
      • The CPU plays the game as you would, limited by the same input restrictions that a human player is.
      • This means that the CPU team has an active player, just like you do, which we call the CPU AI-controlled player.
      • A CPU AI-controlled player exists in the following circumstances:
        • On a team with no human players, for example, the CPU-controlled team in Squad Battles.
        • On a team with human players who are all locked to specific players, that also has CPU teammates, for example, a Pro Clubs team, with less than 11 human players, with no “ANY” player.
      • A CPU AI Controlled Player does not exist in the following circumstances:
        • On a team with human players who are not locked to specific players, For example, a team in FUT Champions.
  • A number of changes to Skill Moves:
    • Increased the responsiveness of the Body Feint Skill Move when performing it while standing still.
    • The Advanced Rainbow can now only be performed by 5 Star Skill Move players.
    • The Ball Roll into Heel Chop Skill Move combination will now require the player to have 4 Star Skill Moves.
    • Players will now be able to use the new Heel Chop Turn Skill Move combo in combination with other Skill Moves, such as a Ball Roll.
    • Increased the likelihood that error will impact multiple Fake Shots chained while sprinting, specifically when they’re chained at a 45 degree angle in either direction.
    • Reduced exit speed when performing the Drag Back Skill Move at a 180 degree angle.
  • Scoring an own goal in King Of The Hill, when the goal is worth 0 points, will now result in your opponent getting a corner kick.
    • Previously this was resulting in a goal kick for the team that scored the own goal.
