Bethesda has announced Doom Eternal, a sequel to the wonderful Doom reboot from 2016!

A teaser trailer showed hell on Earth - a post-apocalyptic nightmare - and culminated with the Doom Slayer stepping into view.

The full Doom Eternal reveal will happen at QuakeCon in August.

Doom Eternal was one of the main stars of the QuakeCon 2018 keynote.

Additional information was provided for Doom Eternal today, we were given our first look at gameplay, and confirmation of a Switch release.

During the QuakeCon 2018 keynote, id Software’s Marty Stratton and Hugo Martin gave everyone a look at the sequel.

One of the coolest takeaways was the ability to play as a demon and make life a living hell for other players. Even better? You can team up with others and form your very own demon gang to hunt other players.

How it works is similar to Dark Souls, as it’s basically a multiplayer invasion. Kirk was sitting in the audience during the keynote at QuakeCon 2018, and he seems pretty excited about the mechanic.

Speaking of demons, there will be twice as many enemies as in the previous game. Players will recognize some have returned, like the Arachnotron, and have been given a bit of a makeover. There will also be new ones and other creatures complete with their own lore. And each time you hit one, it will start to break apart little by little.

Here’s a short list of Doom Eternal features Bethesda sent over:
Slayer 2.0
  • Unleash the overwhelming power of the DOOM Slayer. With updated armour and an arsenal of new and improved equipment, including a shoulder-mounted cannon with flamethrower, extendable blade, and a new dash ability, you’re faster and deadlier than ever. Destroy every demon in your path with an upgraded array of guns and mods, including the Super Shotgun’s new Meat Hook attachment to pull yourself point blank with the faces of hell.
Rip More, Tear More
  • Obliterate more demons than ever before, each with their own attacks and abilities. Fan-favourite classics such as the Pain Elemental, Archvile, and Arachnotron make their return, while a horde of totally-new demons joins the roster including the DOOM Hunter and corrupted Marauders. DOOM Eternal’s “destructible demons” system takes your power fantasy to new levels by ensuring that every trigger pull has never felt better.
All-new Invasion
  • As the Slayer, allow real players to invade your campaign as demons for a dramatic and unpredictable twist anytime you’re playing the campaign. Or join the ranks of the damned yourself as you become a demon and invade a friend or other player’s campaign. Invade others either by yourself or with another player, as part of a hunting party, to give the Slayer a true taste of Hell.
We’re Not on Mars Anymore
  • Rip and tear across epic, never-before-seen worlds. Witness the tumbling skyscrapers of Hell on Earth; battle through an invasion of the mammoth BFG 10,000 on Phobos, and discover the ancient secrets of the DOOM universe. With idTech7, every environment is brought to life in unprecedented detail.
Doom Eternal does not have a release date as of yet, but it’s in the works for PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One.

During the Q&A Roundtable at QuakeCon yesterday, game director Marty Stratton indicated, among other things, that DOOM Eternal will, in fact, have single-player campaign DLC this time around. According to Stratton, they are “making content that we know people want,” given the fact that one of the big criticisms of the 2016 DOOM reboot was that there was not enough single-player campaign DLC after the game’s launch.

Additionally, Stratton announced that DOOM Eternal will not have SnapMap, which is a set of level creation tools that let players build levels out of prefabricated parts, but that the developers are rather putting more resources toward “doing some of the things that players wanted more from us post-launch.” Stratton acknowledged that “[gamers] wanted stuff created by [the developers],” instead of creating their own content, like they have done in previous DOOM games. For Stratton, “SnapMap was really cool. [He] loved it. But it didn’t really scratch that itch for people,” and many DOOM old-timers will agree with that.

Unfortunately, Stratton did not go into too much detail regarding the single-player campaign DLC, and we do not know yet how many campaigns the developers will release post-launch, or how long the campaigns will be. One of the other ways that the developers plan to extend the game’s lifespan post-launch, Stratton points out, is the DOOM Eternal multiplayer function. Apparently, for this instalment of the franchise, there will be more than just invasions, as a more traditional multiplayer component in is developed internally. From these discussions, and from the gameplay trailer, it seems that this installation of DOOM will have definitely a lot to offer players.

Doom Eternal has been delayed on all platforms.

Doom Eternal won’t be making its previously announced November release date, id Software just announced. The game is instead shifting to a March 20 release date on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

The Nintendo Switch version is also no longer releasing day and date with other platforms, and will instead arrive at some point later. Rounding out today’s announcements is the fact Invasion Mode, which allows you to invade the campaign of other players, will not be part of the package at launch.

Invasion will now be added to Doom Eternal in a free update coming post launch. To make up for this trio of bad news, id Software has announced that Doom 64 is now a free pre-order bonus on PC, PS4, Xbox One and Switch.

Doom 64 will now also release March 20 on all four platforms, which is likely to disappoint Switch fans expecting the game this November.

Something to look forward to in March at least. But disappointed that it'll be delayed. Still, as long as they get it right! And I have some faith after the first outing and the trailers so far.
