Boris Johnson has resigned as foreign secretary, becoming the third minister in 24 hours to walk out of the government rather than back Theresa May’s plans for a soft Brexit.

The prime minister hammered out a compromise with her deeply divided cabinet in an all-day meeting at Chequers on Friday, but after consulting friends and allies, Johnson decided he could not promote the deal.

Pressure on the foreign secretary had been mounting since fellow pro-Brexiter David Davis resigned as Brexit secretary on Sunday night, swiftly followed by his No 2 at the Department for Exiting the EU, Steve Baker.

A Downing Street spokesman said: “This afternoon, the prime minister accepted the resignation of Boris Johnson as foreign secretary. His replacement will be announced shortly. The prime minister thanks Boris for his work.”

Friends said Johnson had been finalising his resignation letter, but Downing Street announced his departure before he had completed it.
What a shambles this whole sorry state of affairs is.

Jeremy Hunt is the new Foreign Secretary.

How he is still in a job I'll never know, made a complete balls up of the health service.

The NHS will be celebrating like they have won the world cup - best birthday present ever!!!

Astonishing that he was even in the cabinet to start with. The man is a complete buffoon with a total lack of diplomacy. May should have sidelined him months ago instead of pandering to leavers.

Jeremy Hunt is the new Foreign Secretary.
Good news for the NHS. It would be disastrous for foreign relations except for nothing we do internationally matters any more

I thought it was fairly pathetic that Boris Johnson got a photographer in for a photo of him signing his resignation letter. What a self-absorbed clown.

Johnson toasted May's deal on Friday night and resigned because he couldn't stomach the deal on Monday. Shallow, elitist and incompetent ambition in a nutshell.

Johnson was never pro or anti brexit, he has simply maneuvered a position which gives him the best chance to be Prime Minister.

This has all the hallmarks of Heseltine after the Westland scandal, only Heseltine actually had a few principals, Johnson has none.

Everything Boris Johnson has ever done has been about career moves to try and get him to leader.

While a British citizen had just died from a nerve agent used potentially by a foreign country on British soil, the Foreign Secretary was locked in a room with his team working out the best move for his career. It's absolutely shameful.
