Was hoping the SP would generate a bit more interest for me, but I'm just completely cold to this game. All that bombast and barely any gameplay.

Battlefield 5 will not launch with the option to purchase premium currency with real-world money. Instead, players will initially only be able to earn a free in-game currency as they progress, with the option to buy a paid currency post-launch.

The game’s developer, DICE, made the announcement this week in a post detailing the game’s economy.

DICE producer Ryan McArthur outlined Battlefield 5’s two currencies — Company Coin and Battlefield Currency — and reiterated many of DICE’s talking points from when the game was formally announced in May, including the goal that the game will not be pay-to-win.

While Battlefield 5 will feature single-player missions and several styles of multiplayer action, at the core of the experience will be an individual player’s collection of soldiers and equipment, called the Company. Both gameplay items (like weapons, perks and vehicles) and cosmetic items (like jackets, helmets and weapon skins) can be unlocked for your Company using the currency called Company Coin. Premium currency, called Battlefield Currency, will be sold for real-world money, but will only be used to unlock cosmetic items.

The decision to hold that premium currency back, McArthur said, is in order to help ease players into the concept of the Company as a whole.

“Battlefield Currency can be used to acquire specific cosmetic items for your Company,” McArthur wrote. “We want players to get hands-on experience with their Company, the progression system, and earning Company Coin before introducing premium currency.”

No date for the release of Battlefield Currency was given.

EA and DICE have released a fresh Battlefield 5 maps trailer today. The footage details the 8 locales we’ll be fighting in at launch, as well as one coming shortly thereafter as free DLC.

In the Battlefield 5 maps trailer we first venture into the Hamada map situated in the desert of North Africa. DICE states that Hamada is the largest of the maps that comes with the game at launch. It’s inspired by some of the largest tanks battles in history, and features a variety of steep canyons and narrow bridges.

Also located in North Africa is the Aerodome arena. The Battlefield 5 maps trailer depicts a destroyed Axis airfield following its bombing by Allied forces. There’s a central hanger as a focal point, in which vehicles and infantry will duke it out to control the strategic position.

We then head to France to explore the Twisted Steel map. The developers describe the map’s vast bridge as “the biggest structure ever created for a Battlefield game.” The narrow bridge evokes constant battles amongst infantry as opposing forces seek to control the high points. And the flooded marshlands below are a playing field for the patrolling tanks. Planes are constantly circling above too, proving to provide constant chaos on the battlefield.

The Arras map is also situated in France. Here, tanks roam the fields while infantry look for cover in the extended trench lines. Scattered woods allow for sneaking and melee kills. And a small town’s centre will be the map’s most contested area. An included high church provides sightlines perfect for snipers. But before the tanks that can quickly eliminate that threat.

The Battlefield 5 map trailer then takes us to Holland to explore the Rotterdam map. It’s described as hosting full-scale urban combat in which battles take place throughout the train tracks and streets. And plenty of buildings present a haven for would-be snipers.

Rotterdam’s ugly sibling is the Devastation map. The locale is essentially the ruins of Rotterdam following the war rearing its ugly head. Because of the destruction, Devastation becomes a tight, infantry-focused arena. While tanks patrolling the rubbled streets still provide a heavy threat.

We go north to explore the Narvik map in Norway. The location is inspired by the invasion of Narvik in 1940. Players will fight for control of the harbour town, with close quarter battles taking place throughout the map’s residential buildings. More opened shooting is available throughout the Narvik’s industrial areas.

Depending on your chosen platform and how much you’re willing to fork out, you can be playing Battlefield 5 by the end of the week.

Battlefield 5 has different tiers of release dates that vary by game edition, and platform in some cases. What this means is that the game effectively has three release dates.

This also dictates how early the game will be available to pre-load. Thankfully, EA has unveiled full pre-load details for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, as well as for the different editions of the game.

PC is the simplest to keep track of, because the date below applies to all of the game’s various editions. This includes Origin Access, with the only difference being when you’ll be able to start the game. For the full round-up, see below.

Battlefield 5 PC pre-load dates and times
  • All versions: Wednesday, November 7 at 5am PT, 8am ET, 1pm GMT.
Battlefield 5 PS4 pre-load dates and times

North America
  • Deluxe Edition: Wednesday, November 7 at 9pm PT, 12am ET (November 8).
  • Standard Edition: Monday, November 12 at 9pm PT, 12am ET (November 13).
Europe
  • Deluxe Edition: Tuesday, November 13 at 12am local time.
  • Standard Edition: Sunday, November 18 at 12am local time.
Battlefield 5 Xbox One pre-load dates and times
  • Battlefield 5 pre-load is available now.
Battlefield 5 launches November 20 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The Deluxe Edition goes live on November 15, and the EA/Origin Access trial starts November 9.

The single player campaign is very well done, I know it's basically just a tutorial for multiplayer, but still a decent play.

Played a few games last night before bed. Got a kick out of the Prologue then straight into a grand operation which went on forever on Twisted Steel and Arras, then a bit of Devastation! The sound is spectacular. This is going to take many many hours of my life

Battlefield 5 is out in a couple of weeks, which means it’s time to watch the launch trailer.

DICE will release Battlefield 5 to the general public November 20, but Origin Access Premier subscribers started playing yesterday.

Those who purchased the Battlefield 5 Deluxe Edition can start playing next week on November 15. The rest of us will have to wait until its worldwide release.

A few outlets were given a chance to play early, and there are a few review scores out in the wild. Most are in-progress, like our own, but more will drop next week. The round-up will be updated when additional scores are published. At present, what scores are available are rather good.

The campaign will consist of multiple War Stories, set for a staggered release and the 64-player battle royale mode, Firestorm, arrives in March. The game will launch with eight multiplayer maps.

Following a delay, DICE’s next big Battlefield is finally here.

Battlefield 5 represents a return to DICE’s WW2 roots, for the first time in a mainline entry since Battlefield 1942. The game brings a great deal of changes to the core formula.

This is still a class-based shooter, but the new Combat Roles offer greater diversity and utility. Destruction returns, better than ever with more accurately modelled effects such as debris shooting outwards when explosives detonate indoors.

The biggest new feature, however, is the attrition system. This manifests in different ways such as the lack of automatic health regen, the limitations on player and vehicle ammo, and more. Gunplay, too, has been touched up, doing away with Battlefield 1’s dreaded random deviation and bringing it back to the more skill-based, high-recoil action.

At launch, Battlefield 5 multiplayer will include eight maps, and the single-player War Stories mode with four episodes. The Combined Arms co-op mode, an extra War Stories chapter, the Firestorm battle royale mode, and more maps are all coming in various waves post launch.

Most reviews – including ours – will likely be based on early impressions, with full reviews to follow later after everyone has played the game in a live environment.

The few scores below will be out of ten, except where noted.
Battlefield 5’s official release date is November 20 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, but owners of the Deluxe Edition will be able to play November 15. Battlefield 5’s EA/Origin Access trial starts this Friday, November 9 on PC, and Xbox One, though Premier members will be able to play past the ten-hour cap.
